Miller County warns of scam

MILLER COUNTY – The Miller County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) is warning people of a scam from someone claiming to be from the sheriff’s department requesting money.

The detailed scam was described by a spokesman from the sheriff’s office.

“The Sheriff’s office has received several complaints today (August 11) about receiving a phone call from a person identifying themselves as Deputy Ellis with the Sheriff’s Office. The caller told the victim that they needed to pay money to avoid a warrant. Luckily the victim was smarter than the scammer and didn’t fall for their tactics. They called the number 573-453-5833 back and it actually has a pre-recording claiming to be the Sheriff’s Office and provides actual extensions for specialized units.”

“First and foremost, we do not have a Deputy Ellis. Secondly, deputies will not call you and request money or advise you about a warrant. The phone number is fake and listed as a Salem, Missouri number, which was most likely generated using an app that makes you think you’re receiving a local call.”

The MCSO said that if anyone in Miller County receives a call like this, they are encouraged to contact the county’s legitimate dispatch number at 573-369-2341 Extension 0 and request to speak with an actual deputy about the call.

“Unfortunately these numbers are usually untraceable and suspects are usually in other states or countries,” the spokesman said. “We encourage everyone to share this post and spread the word, so no one becomes a victim of fraud. Additionally we encourage you to contact Attorney General Eric Schmitt office and report any scams via the Consumer Protection Division hotline 1-800-392-8222.”
