Forty-six pounds of drugs destroyed in kiosk

SUNRISE BEACH – Last November the Sunrise Beach Police Department (SBPD) installed a prescription drug destruction kiosk – the first one in Missouri.

Since then people have brought up drugs to the SBPD to be destroyed resulting in 46 pounds of drugs that were destroyed.

Destroying these drugs keeps them off the streets and out of landfills.

This innovative system allows residents to safely destroy unwanted or expired medications themselves, no questions asked.

Once deposited, medications are neutralized in a special charcoal solution, rendering them unusable. The sealed containers are then sent to a facility where the material is used to create energy.

The kiosk was initially funded by the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout and will be maintained through the Laurie-Sunrise Beach Rotary Club’s Project SMART.

According to the Chief of Police (Editor’s note: the police chief does have a good sense of humor) the destruction of the “I have no idea why I still have this” medications prevents them from:

The drug destruction kiosk is right inside the SBPD and there is no paperwork, no questions and no judgment for those bringing drugs in to be destroyed, according to the SBPD.

“A Huge thank you to the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, Laurie-Sunrise Beach Rotary (Project SMART) and a community that actually shows up and does the right thing,” The police chief said. “Because of you 46 pounds of potential problems never became problems.”

Those wishing to dispose of drugs need to call ahead to ensure they have an officer available as they don’t always have someone on and if they do they could be on a call.
