'Achy Breaky' ...NO!

LAKE OZARK – A request by Casa de Loco Productions/Beavers, LLC for a Special Event Permit to hold a Billy Ray Cyrus concert on the strip went down in flames last week.

The promoter, Larry Owens, wanted to hold the concert on June 1 of this year but the sticking point was where the event was to be held. The request entailed shutting down a section of The Strip all day long – from 8 a.m. to 10:45 p.m. and re-routing traffic onto Valley Road.

The strip has been shut down in the past for various events but it was shut down for vehicle traffic and was still open to the public. The request for the concert would mean that a section of public right-of-way would not be available to the public unless they bought a ticket to the concert.

So that public right-of-way would be used to generate profit and that was what the board objected to. The permit application estimated an attendance of 5,000. Besides Cyrus, the other act listed was Derek Jones and Sound Advice. Merchandise for Cyrus and Jones would also be available for sale.

It was suggested to Owens that he hold the concert below Bagnell Dam but he said he checked into that but it was not available.

City Police Chief Gary Launderville disputed that by saying he had spoken to those in charge of the property below the dam and they said they had not been contacted.

Owens also said that as part of the agreement, they would give ten percent of the profits to the city to use at their discretion with a $10,000 minimum.

When a motion to approve the permit application was asked for, silence came from the Board of Aldermen. With a lack of a motion, the request died on the floor.
