Puppy rescued from car

CAMDEN COUNTY – All occupants, including a puppy, are safe after their vehicle went into the water on New Year’s Day.

On January 1, at 8:04 p.m., the Mid-County Fire Protection District (MCFPD) was dispatched to a reported car in the water in the Niangua River off of Tunnel Dam Road.

Upon arrival, crews found that all occupants had escaped the car and were accounted for but they had left their Dalmatian puppy in the car.  The Mid-County Water Rescue Team responded and upon arrival, donned protective suits and entered the water.

The team of Capt. Jim Wilson and Capt. Curtis Bowen had to walk approximately one-half mile to locate the vehicle.

Upon locating the vehicle, they found that the front two thirds of the vehicle was completely submerged, however, the very rear of the vehicle was above the waterline.

The team located the puppy in the rear of the vehicle and was able to remove the dog through the rear window. The team then carried the pup back to dry land where he was reunited with his family. The puppy was cold and frightened but uninjured.

The team had to deal with significant currents during the rescue, which made it more difficult. There were no other injuries and units cleared the scene 9:48 p.m.

The MCFPD was assisted at the scene by the Camden County Sheriff’s Office. The Southwest Fire District attempted to access the vehicle from their side of the river but had to turn around due to the high waters.

The MCFPD would like to remind everyone to not drive through flooded roadways. Always remember “Turn Around-Don’t Drown”.
