Resolution presented to youth ambassador

JEFFERSON CITY - State Representative Diane Franklin (R-Camdenton) presented a House Resolution to Maya Irvine, a Camdenton High School Student. Irvine has been selected to serve in the inaugural class of Youth Afterschool Ambassadors.

Irvine is one of five students nationwide that has been selected to serve as an Ambassador for the Afterschool Program. The Ambassadors will do such things as design and carry out projects showcasing the value of afterschool programs and the impact it has had on both students and families.

They will also be traveling to Washington, D.C. next April to participate in the annual Afterschool for All Challenge, where they will meet with members of Congress to express the importance of the program across the nation.

“I am so proud of Maya for being named one of the five students nationwide. It is truly an honor not just for her, but for the Camdenton School District and all of Missouri. Maya has shown true leadership in the district and it’s wonderful that the people at the national level have recognized that, I know she will do an amazing job” said Franklin.

Participation in afterschool programs has increased to 10.2 million students nationwide, up from 6.5 million in 2004. But the demand for afterschool programs has increased as well. Today, for every child in an afterschool program, there are two more whose parents say they would participate, if a program were available.

This demand is especially high in rural communities. One in five students in the United States today is unsupervised after the school day ends, often for several hours each day.

“I congratulate our school for the successful program they have, and all of the surrounding school districts who participate in similar programs. The demand by both students and parents is very high, and many of our schools are answering that demand” concluded Rep. Franklin.
